Biography

Herbert was the son of Edward Clemens and Mary Ann Jones. His birth was registered at Pahiatua.

He attended Horoeka School. ( Reg.no 30 - admission 28 July, 1902 - last day 18 December 1903)

Herbert worked as a Labourer for his father in Pukehinau.

He enlisted during WWI and was attached to D Regiment. 7th Reinforcements. Herbert was wounded in June 1917 but remained at duty.

In October 1918 Herbert was serving in the Ruahine Company of the 1st Wellington Battalion as the Allies drove further East towards Maubeuge after the fall of Cambrai. On the evening of October 10th, the 1st Wellington were pushing towards Briastre to secure the railway line on the East side of the River Selle, but was pinned down by heavy machine gun fire as dawn broke. Some managed to get under cover but Ruahine Company was caught on an exposed slope and suffered heavy casualties. It was here that Herbert James Clemens was killed in action on 11 October 1918, exactly one month before Armistice Day.

In 1918, Lce Cpl Herbert James Clemens was killed in action in France aged just 23.

At the time of his death he was serving with 1st Battalion, Wellington Regiment.

He is buried at Romeries Communal Cemetery Extension. LOC : V11. D. 11 [1]
