William was born in Northamptonshire and is the only known child of Eliza Saunders and Anthony Clemens, Exciseman. His birth was registered at Brixton, Northamptonshire. William's surname is recorded as Clemens and Clements.
His father left England in 1843 with 99 Foot Regiment bound for Tasmania, Australia.
In 1847, William's mother died and at age 10 in 1841, he is recorded living with his grandparents, Margaret Perryn and Daniel Saunders, retired Cordwainer, in Horsley, Gloucestershire. Margaret, aged 70 is widowed and receiving parish relief.
Daniel Saunders passed away in 1856 and William continued to live with his grandmother now 80, at the time of the 1861 census. They lived in the district of Horsely at Whiteway and he was employed as an Agricultural Labourer. Margaret Saunders was on Parish Relief.
William wasn't found on any census after 1861. Did he possibly go to sea?
William's grandmother died in 1867 at the age of 84.
