Only Daughter of Orion & Jane Stotts Clemens, niece of Samuel Clemens (AKA Mark Twain). Born in Iowa in 1855, Jennie died of 'spotted fever' in Carson City, Nevada, in 1864 at the age of 9. She was raising money to purchase a Bible for the local Presbyterian Church at the time of her death.
Jennie died in the upstairs front room of the Clemens home. The Orion Clemens House, at 502 N. Division St. in Carson City, Nevada, United States, was built in 1862. Also known as Mark Twain's House, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
Her father, Orion, was appointed by President Lincoln to serve as Secretary of the newly created Nevada Territory in 1861.

Abe Curry donated the sandstone marker for her grave and the Bible for the Church. The stone is quite small and has a unique shape, not quite square, but cut almost on a "bias" with an ivy vine wrapped around the stone, which represents everlasting life and rebirth.
Carson City was in Ormsby County in 1864. It was changed to Consolidated Municipality of Carson City in 1969. It is an independent city with Carson City as the capital of Nevada.
