Narrative: Hallowell Clement was educated in the common schools and the Eastern Normal School. He taught school for several years; then about 1881 he went to Colorado to practice law; later he went to Montana to join his brother in the stock raising business.
Starting 1 August 1954, a series of six articles of early days (1881-1885) appeared in a Billings, Montana newspaper, The Billings Gazette. The series was based on the diary of Hallowell Clement in which he faithfully recorded entries starting in Bangor, Maine. In 1954, the diary was in the possession of Hallowell Jr., who later donated it to the Montana State Historical Museum at Helena.
The newspaper series continues -- Hallowell Sr. studied law at Union University, Albany, NY graduating in 1878; returning to Bangor to practice law. For health reasons, Hallowell Sr. left Maine for the west on 22 April 1881; traveled by train and arrived in Denver, Colorado on 26 April. His Colorado stay included the town of Robinson where on 9 May 1881 he went into a law partnership with John A. Hall, Jr.
The newspaper series continues -- His health did not show improvement in Colorado, so he settled his accounts with his law partner, and on 17 September 1881 he left Colorado for Montana to join his older brother Olin Olin Lorette Clement). Hallowell and Olin built up a sheep raising ranch enduring many hardships as recorded in the diary. In 1884 the count showed 2,671 head of sheep.
The newspaper series continues -- Hallowell's legal expertise and other skills were in demand by other residents of the area. The Clement brothers befriended one of their neighbors, a Mr. Jordan, and one of Hallowell's functions was to write to Jordan's daughter Miss Belle F. Jordan of Scranton, Pennsylvania and keep her informed of her father's condition. The end result was that Hallowell left on a trip back east on 5 December1885 and ended up with Miss Belle as his bride in February 1886.
In 1890 brother Olin Olin Lorette Clement) returned to Maine after selling his Montana holdings to Hallowell.
[Compiler's note: The marriage application of Hallowell, age thirty-one and Belle, age twenty-two shows he as a resident of Flatwillow, Montana; she of Scranton, Pennsylvania. His occupation lawyer and stock raiser; hers music teacher (marriage license 361 issued 24 Feb 1886 by the Orphan's court of Lackawanna county,Pennsylvania).
The newspaper series continues -- About 1891, Hallowell located in Billings, purchasing a home and opening a law office. Five years later he gave up his law practice to devote full time to his livestock interests which now include sheep, cattle and horses. Eventually he accumulated considerable land holdings in Montana and Nebraska and mining interests in Colorado and Alaska.
Family tradition is that before his death, Hallowell Sr. destroyed all his journals that were written after his marriage. Only the diary covering the years 1881-1885 survives. (Joan Clement Guttormsen to John Clement, 9 May 1994).
Family tradition also states that Hallowell and Belle had a set of twins prior to Robert and Douglas at Scranton. Belle was in Montana by 1894 when son Hallowell was born (Joan Clement Guttormsen to John Clement, 9May 1994).
The History of Petroleum County contains a sketch on Hallowell which repeats much of the above. This source indicates Olin sold out to Hallowell for $20,000 in 1890. Also this source shows Ora Clement Ora Milford Clement as Hallowell's brother -- this is not correct, they are cousins. (Pages of Time, A History of Petroleum County, Montana [Lewistown, Montana : News-Argus Printing, 1990, pages 289-290] authored by the Petroleum County Public Library).
The following extracted from (Central Montana Wagon Trails, volume 13 (1991) page 13 and volume 14 page 25): Assessment Roll of Fergus County, Montana for the Year 1920 - under real estate and improvements, H.F.Clement showed a value of $33,212. On a page listing 115 taxpayers, only one exceeded this amount, and most others were less than $5,000. [5]
