Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Washington (Clement) Bumpass is a part of US Black heritage.

Washington was born about 1789, possibly in Granville County, North Carolina. He was an enslaved person in the household of Simon Clement and his wife Nancy Clement.

Simon Clement died in 1838 in Granville, North Carolina. His will specified that if wife Nancy remarried, his estate would have to be immediately divided into 5 equal parts--one for Nancy and one for each of the 4 minor children.[1]

In Sep 1842, because the widow and relict, Nancy Clement, had married John Bumpass in 1839, division of the estate of Simon Clement occurred. The slaves to be sold were: Washington, Aggy, Poly & her child, Reese, Kreener, Mary, Martha, Peter, Andrew, Mintus, Calvin. [2]

On 1 Oct 1842, the commissioners divided Simon Clement's enslaved people into 5 lots:

  • No. 3 Polly & child 22 & 1 $400, Washington 53 $300, average $700 to Ann Bumpass, paying $39.[3]
