Biography

Rachel Clement was born about 1754 in Goochland, Colony of Virginia, daughter of Benjamin Clement (~1736–1813) and Mary Baker (~1735–<1786).

Rachel married Henry Harrison Combs (born about 1765 in Frederick, Colony of Virginia; son of John Combs Sr and Nancy Margaret (Harding) Combs) in Montgomery, Virginia. Their children were:

Rachel died after 1830 in Perry, Kentucky, United States, aged about 75.

Research Notes

Speculation - The information in Rootsweb about the Clements lists sister Rebecca, born between brothers in the 1770s with a "dy?". Henry's daughter Winifred Nancy was born 1784, and he married Rachel in 1788. Perhaps Rebecca died & Henry married her sister? Something to look into. ~ Liz Shifflett Locations: Rachel's grandparents (Clement-382 & Susanna Hill) were born and married in King and Queen County; their Patriotic Service during the Revolution occurred in Pittsylvania County, which was formed 1766-7. The area that became Pittsylvania County was once Brunswick County.

Birth location for Rachel's father is given by DAR records as Alta Vista and Brunswick county. One online tree (Rootsweb) has her father born Amelia County, saying King and Queen county became Amelia county. However, Amelia county was formed 1734-5 from Brunswick and Prince George counties (King and Queen county remaining as such, several counties away). The Rootsweb tree also has Rachel's birth in Goochland county (in 1754).
In 1732, Goochland and Brunswick counties shared a border. In 1734, Amelia county was formed from Brunswick county, abutting Goochland's southern border. Altavista, created 1905 in Campbell county, is further south, near the upper border of modern Pittsylvania county, in the area that was Brunswick county in 1745, Lunenberg county in 1746, and Halifax county in 1752).
Goochland and Amelia counties are on the path between King & Queen and Pittsylvania. In 1772, Pittsylvania county extended west nearly to the area that in 1790 became Montgomery county, which is where Henry was (although he's said to have been in the area that became Wythe county, which was further west, covering part of the area that became Washington county, from which Russell county was formed in 1786). So many of the locations mentioned for Rachel, her father, and her husband are in the same general area. (As is Sullivan county, Tennessee, where their son Henry was born. Not sure about the Georgia location though.)
See the relationship of the counties & their formation at this site.

DAR Patriot Ancestor #A022963, Benjamin Clement, born King & Queen county, married Susannah Hill (also a DAR Patriot Ancestor, #A023018) & had a daughter Rachel (b 1740) who married Joshua Abston (in 1760) and died in Pittsylvania County, Virginia.

  • Daughters of the American Revolution, DAR Genealogical Research Databases, database online, (http://www.dar.org/ : accessed July 12, 2016), "Record of Benjamin Clement", Ancestor # A022963.

This Rootsweb page has Mary Baker as wife of Benjamin Clement (son of Benjamin & Susannah), mother of Rachel who married Henry (b 1762):

Capt Benjamin CLEMENT b c1700/4 King & Queen VA (became Amelia in 1734), d Mar/Apr 1780 Lunenburg VA, will dtd 30 Mar, prvd 18 Apr 1780 Pittsylvania VA, bur foot of Clement Hill, m c1725/6 King & Queen VA Susanna HILL b c1709 King and Queen VA; d 1788 Pittsylvania VA, dau of Col. Isaac HILL & Margaret JENNINGS. (and more about Susannah, living 1785)
  • daughter of Benjamin & Susannah, Rachel, 1747 VA; d bef 30 Mar 1780; m 1760 Pittsylvania VA Capt Joshua/John ABSTON b 1735 VA, son Francis ABSTON.
  • son of Benjamin & Susannah: Capt. Benjamin CLEMENTS II b 1735 Amelia VA; d c1813 Harrison KY, m (1) Mary BAKER, m (2) Sariah BAILEY
  • DAR has son of Benjamin and Susannah Hill, Benjamin m Sarah Bailey: see this record)
So... Benjamin & Susannah's son Benjamin & his first wife Mary Baker are the parents of the Rachel who married Henry Combs, according to the Rootsweb page that was compiled by a descendant of Benjamin & his second wife Sarah Bailey (had a note that was "my line). That site has her born July 15, 1754, Goochland county, which doesn't fit with her father born in Brunswick county or with her having George by Henry in 1798 (and more - Combs-439 shows several children after that).
If July 15, 1754 was her parent's marriage date, then Rachel was born between 1755 and Mary's death in August 1777. On April 17, 1786, her father married Sariah (Sarah) Bailey (born c1768 in Montgomery County, Virginia). Sarah and Benjamin married in Pittsylvania County .[1]

Died Y. 1830 Perry,Kentucky, Verenigde Staten. Age: 77. Buried Kentucky, United States.

hmm. Apparently I didn't do it right, since Rebecca's still unattached.

And... She and Combs-439 had a daughter, yes? Shouldn't Winifred Nancy born 1784 be attached to this profile instead of his wife Phoebe Francis (married 1832)?
