James Clemson III is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A023037.

James Clemson is remembered for his Patriotic Service by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. He took the Oath of Allegiance in support of the Continental Congress, in 1778. He was a deputy that was sent to the Provincial Convention from Lancaster county. [2] Applications for membership in the DAR have been made by the descendants of James and his wife Margaret Heard, of his daughters, Rebecca Clemson, who married William McCansland; Sarah Clemson, who married John McCauley; Margaret Clemson, who married John Watson; Rachel Clemson, who married David Whitehill; and of his sons, John Clemson, who married Elizabeth Haines; and James Clemson, who married Mary Brady.

Researcher's Notes

The Clemson Family of Pennsylvania, by Raymond Martin Bell, Frank R. Baird, and Margaret Snyder Ward, Published by Washington and Jefferson College, 1971 gives James' date of birth as August 10, 1729. DAR records give the date of birth for this James Clemson as December 5, 1730. His Find A Grave memorial [3] gives his date of birth as August 10, 1729. His Find A Grave memorial also indicates that he was a "member of Captain David Whitehill's Company of Salisbury Township, 1777, which formed part of the Seventh Battalion of Lancaster County Militia." and gives a source of The Genealogical Register, p. 240. Further investigation is required to determine whether this is the same (doubtful) James Clemson.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:
