General St John Augustus Clerke was "son of Dr Jonathan Clerke (1764-1838) and Elizabeth Shadwell (1768-1842). He married Louisa Waring and had at least six children"[1]

Sibling of Major Thomas Henry Shadwell Clerke Clerke-259 and William Clerke, afterwards a major in the 77th Foot[2]

In 1819 he was promoted from Lieutenant to Captain of a company, by purchase, in the 77th Regiment of Foot[3]

In 1825 he was promoted from Captain to Major, by purchase, in the 77th Regiment[4]

In 1860 he was promoted "Major-General St John Augustus Clerke, Colonel of the 75th Foot, to be Lieutenant-General. Dated 11th April 1860"[5]

8 March 1867 he was promoted to the rank of a full General[6]

His marriage is recorded in 10 July 1827 at Waringstown, County Down. As Major St John Augustus Clerke of the 77th Regiment to Louisa, relict of the late Rev. J. M. Brooke[7]

St John was born in Ireland c. 1796 and served with distinction during the Peninsular War. He reached the rank of Lieutenant Governor and Colonel in the Army and was a Knight of the Royal Hanoverian Guelphic Order.
