John William Clerke (born 1814) was a graduate of Trinity College, Dublin, having studied the classics, mathematics and astronomy. He was a close friend of Rickard Deasy. He married Rickard's sister Catherine on 9 July 1839. Catherine was educated at the Ursuline Convent, Cork, and was proficient in playing the piano and harp. "The Clerke family were Protestants while the Deasy family were Roman Catholics."[1]
