In 1862 he received a non-foundation scholarship in science from the Trinity College in Dublin
In 1863 he was awarded a first class honours in mathematics from Trinity College, Dublin. He was nephew of the Right Honorable Baron Deasy and son of John William Clerke esq. who had managed a branch of the Union Bank of Ireland
