"Alexander Clerke (1804-1877) and his wife Frances Gretrude Sweetnam (1805-1881) who freely immigrated from Southern Ireland to Van Diemen's Land in the late 1820's. " Siblings include Dr Jonathon Clerke, one time Colonial Surgeon in Geelong, Victoria.
He left Ireland in the year 1828, with Mrs Clerke, in a ship (Letitia) which was wrecked Mrs Clerke came on to Van Diemen's land while Alexander returned to Ireland to claim for losses, finally making a safe journey to Van Diemen's land in 1829. He settled at "Mountford" in the Longford area. He became a member of the Tasmanian
Parliament, for the district of Ringwood, 1857–1860; 1862–1863; 1872–1874
