"William Clerke, father of Alexander, on his death was described in 1820 as of the 'Skibbereen Mills' which suggests he possessed a extensive enterprise. His widow Helen (McCarthy?) survived him and presumably is the Mrs Clerke that is listed in a directory of 1824, under the heading 'Nobility, Gentry & Clergy'"[1]
