The Lancashire parish registers show a number of children born to John Newton Clerke, and Dorrythie The transcription makes it a little unclear whether he was John Newton who was a clerk or his name was John Newton Clerke but the christening record for Marmaduke would suggest the later. A 1596 document refers to a John de Newton Clerke However the reference appears to be in Latin and needs decipherment.
