William Clerke was probably born about 1528, Benington, Hertfordshire. He was the eldest son of George Clerke according to George's will dated 08 October 1556 (see Historical Antiquities of Hertfordshire, volume 2, page 128).
William's sons George and John were born about 1553 and 1557, respectively. He is mentioned as being their father in Alumni Cantabrigienses (pages 341 and 342). That source also states that son George Clarke succeeded to his father's estate in 1591.
He bought Chisfield Manor (and lands in Chisfield, Graveley, and Stevenage) from Thomas Bedyll according to The Herts Genealogist and Antiquary (Volume 1, page 346). This purchase apparently happened in 1565 or 1566.
The will of William Clerke, Yeoman of Benington, Hertfordshire, was written on 12 May 1591 and probated on 10 June 1591: http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D927169 . It mentions land tenements, hereditaments, and houses in Benington and Walkern , and the manor of Chesfield. It also says that he wished to be buried in Bennington near to the place where George Clarke his father was buried.
At St. Peter Church in Benington, in the nave on the east wall, to the north of the chancel arch, are two brasses, with inscriptions to William Clarke, 1591, and John Clarke, 1604. Source: The Victoria history of the county of Hertford (page 76 ?).
NOTE: William is possibly a brother of George Clerke ( http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Clerke-189 ).
