Biography

Aexander, son of Roger Cleveland and Dorcas Unknown (poss. Alexander?), was baptized on 31 Jul 1687 at Abington Parish, Gloucester County, VA.[1][2] A birth in July 1659 [3][4] would mean he was having children well into his 50s. He died after 9 Feb 1774 at Fredericksville Parish, VA, when it was "Ordered that the Church Wardens provide such things for Alexander Cleveland as they shall think necessary.[2]

On 22 Nov 1752 Alexander deeded 100 acres to John Taylor of Culpeper Co without a wife's consent. By 30 Nov 1769, he was in the poor house, with one year of support from his son-in-law Edward Coffey.[2]

Disputed Parents

Alexander Cleveland & "Lady Axmister" did not qualify at all as Alexander's parents based on George Martin's 1956 research. According to Martin (1956), he's the son of Roger Cleveland and Dorcas UNKNOWN.[2]

Marriage & Children

He married Mary (surname unknown) between 1695 and 1711, at Gloucester County, Virginia; children (bp. Abington Parish; surname CLEVELAND):[1][2][5]

  1. Alexander Jr - bp. 25 May 1712; d. Oct 1776, Blue Run, Orange County, VA; m. Margaret DOOLITTLE
  2. John - b. 31 Jul 1714; d. 26 Nov 1778, Blue Run, Orange County; m. Elizabeth COFFEY
  3. Grace - b. 1 Sep 1716; m. Edward COFFEY brother of Elizabeth
  4. William - b. 23 Feb 1718/19; d. bef 29 May 1788; probate 9 Jun 1788, Loudoun County, VA; m. Mary —
  5. Benjamin - b. 21 Nov 1721; d. 20 Oct 1748

Research by Grace Lee Smith Green indicates that no Mildred/Milly/Mary Presley existed. In addition, neither Jeremiah, Jane, Micajah nor Elizabeth who married James Coffey were Alexander's children.[2]

Death

By 30 Nov 1769, Alexander was in the poor house, with one year of support from his son-in-law Edward Coffey. He died after 9 Feb 1774 at Fredericksville Parish, VA, when it was "Ordered that the Church Wardens provide such things for Alexander Cleveland as they shall think necessary."[2]

Stories that he lived to be 111 and died 3 days after his wife[6] are doubtful and based on inaccurate birth and death dates. His wife Mary probably died before 22 Nov 1752 when she did not consent to a deed signed only by Alexander.[2]

If his son was Alexander Jr and his father Roger shouldn't someone remove Jr from this profile?

Yes, that appears to be a remnant from the detached/disputed parents. I removed it.

Cleveland-4059 and Cleveland-333 appear to represent the same person because: same name, same son with same details
