Larkin Cleveland was born in Virginia in 1748. A patriot in the American Revolution, serving in North Carolina, he was wounded in action while on the march with the Overmountain Men on the way to the Battle of King's Mountain. Although crippled by this for the rest of his life, he went on to move his family to the Georgia frontier and eventually the Tennessee frontier.

SECTION TEN [NINE]--Buford STATION Robert Guthrie and Colonel L. Cleaveland of King's Mountain memory, came about the time John and Sam Jones came, or soon after. They all raised corn in 1808. Col. Cleaveland settled on part of the farm now owned by Mrs. Judge Spofford where he died; and his grave is near the building occupied by the Superintendent of the farm.

  • 1814-9 - Last will and testament of Larkin CLEVELAND dec'd proven by oaths of Thomas LANE, Martin LANE and James PERRY, wit.. German LESTER, exr' qualified. GI Cty., TN Cty. Ct. Min., p 204.
  • July 9th Larkin Cleveland dies in Giles Co., Tennessee. The will which was included in the NSDAR records for Georgia, 1974, was in the private possession of Carter Harrison Cleveland of Mobile Alabama. John Carter and Thomas Carter along with C. Morton and Robert Walton are witnesses. Sons are Benjamin, David, Abner, Oliver Cromwell, and Carter Harrison. Daughters are Elizabeth (Walton), Sarah (Jordan), Rhoda (Franklin), Asenath (Callaway), Lucinda, and Pamela. Wife is Frances (Fanny) Wright Cleveland. Slaves to his wife Fanny if she stays unmarried; land to each of sons and daughters; and gives to Oliver Cromwell the place upon he now lives. The will was written April 20, 1805.
  • 1815-3-10 - On petition of German LESTER, exor. of last will and testament of Larkin CLEAVELAND, dec'd, their being 9 magistrates present and setting forth that the caid [sic] Cleveland by his last will and testament requested his Executors to procure the emancipation of a mulatto woman named Milly, otherwise Milly COLE, and her 2 children, Doctor Franklin and Amelia, on account of the meritorious services of said Milly, otherwise called Milly COLE; it is therefore ordered and required by said court that said German LESTER give bond with security in the penalty of $1,000 conditional as the act directs, whereupon German LESTER, Henry HAGAN, Fountain LESTER, Thomas SMITH and Carter CLEAVELAND acknowledged themselves indebted to the state of TN in the sum of $1,000 to be levied of their goods and chattles lands and tenements, to be void on condition said Milly otherwise called Milly COLE and her children Doctor Franklin and Amelia that they save the Cty. from all damages which may be sustained on account of their becoming chargeable to this Cty., which said security is approved of and accepted by the court, and thereupon John DICKEY, Chairman of said court having reported said petition that the same is granted by the court that said Milly otherwise called Milly COLE and her said children Doctor Franklin and Amelia be emancipated. Larkin's tombstone is in the Lane Cemetery, Giles County, Tennessee, United States with a death date of 9 July 1814.[7]
