Biography

Joseph was born in 1791 to Wyatt Cleveland and Temperance Freeman. He married Martha Meeks in 1809. [1]

Joseph enlisted in the Creek Indian wars in 1813 for six months. He served his time and was discharged in Milledgeville, GA on March 10, 1814.

Joseph and his servant were seen on the bank of the Sipsey river on their way to Montgomery, Alabama to bank the money from the sale of Joseph's plantation, but they never made it. Apparently, some eye witness saw these two (Joseph weighted over 300 pounds). They later saw the servant without Joseph. Joseph was never seen again nor heard from. Was he killed by his servant? He left his family penniless. His wife Martha had already died. Because of this disappearance there is no burial sight for his body, it is believed his body was thrown into a river near Montgomery, Alabama.

The last deed he recorded in Tuscaloosa Co., AL was August 1, 1861. This means he died AFTER that date.
