John was baptised January 30, 1842 at at St Thomas the Martyr in Upholland, Lancashire, England. He was the son of William Cliff and Elizabeth Aiker.

His 1st marriage was to Alice Hart on June 24, 1866 at St Thomas the Martyr in Upholland. He was 24 years old at the time and she was 26. His father was William Cliff and her father was James Hart.[1]
His 2nd marriage was to widow Annie Telford (nee Edwards) on February 5, 1908 at Holy Trinity in Ashton in Makerfield, Lancashire. He was 66 years old, a widower, his occupation was caretaker and his father William Cliff, farmer, was deceased. She was 44 years old and her father Richard Edwards, gamekeeper was also deceased. Both the bride and groom's residence was Bryn Road Hospital. Witnesses were Richard Cliff and Nellie Cliff.[2][3]
In the 1911 Census, he was 69 years old and working as a Porter in an Infectious Diseases Hospital in Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire and his new wife Annie was 53 and both of them were listed as servants.[4]
John died at the age of 73 in December 1911 at Bryn Road in Ashton in Makerfield and was buried December 11th in Billinge, Lancashire.[5]
