Biography

Birth and Parentage

Sir John Clifford, KG, 7th Lord Clifford, hereditary Sheriff of Westmorland, was born at Hart and baptised there on 23 April 1389[1] (age about 3 in 1392, 13 in 1403, 21 in 1411)[2][3][4] was the son of Sir Thomas de Clifford,[1] 6th Lord Clifford, and Elizabeth de Roos (Ros), daughter of Thomas de Roos, Knt., 4th Lord Roos of Helmsley, and Lady Beatrix Stafford.[2][3][4] John succeeded his father, who died 18 Aug 1391,[2][3] when he was about 3 years old.[4][5] He was made a ward to the king, the wardship being granted to his mother who would also arrange his marriage.[6]

John made proof of his age in 1410/11,[4] when he would have come into his inheritance.

Marriage and Issue

John married Elizabeth Percy, daughter of Sir Henry 'Hotspur' Percy and Elizabeth de Mortimer, daughter of Sir Edmund de Mortimer, 3rd Earl of March. The marriage probably took place in 1404.[2][3][6] They had 4 children:[2][3]

Life

John and his wife Elizabeth received papal permission to have a portable altar in 1412.[2][3]

John was summoned to Parliament from 21 Sep 1412 to 26 February 1421[2][3][4] as 7th Lord of Skipton.

John's father took part in tournaments, [9] and John himself participated in a tournament at Carlisle between six English and six Scottish knights.[4]

In 1415 John fought in Henry V's Siege of Harfleur and then in the Battle of Agincourt on 25 Oct 1415.[10]

In 1416/7 John was contracted to serve in France:[6]

that the said John, Lord Clifford, with fifty men-at-arms well accoutred, whereof three to be knights, the rest esquires, and one hundred and fifty archers, whereof two parts to serve on horseback, the third on foot, should serve the king from the day he should be ready to set sail for France, taking for himself 4s. for every knight, for every esquire is., for every archer 6d. a day.

In 1418 John was heir to his uncle Sir William Clifford.[2] On 3 May 1421 was made a Knight of the Garter.[4][11][12] He was a legatee in the 1421 will of King Henry V.[2][3]

Death and Burial

He was killed at the Siege of Meaux on 13 Mar 1422,[13] and is said to have been buried at Bolton Abbey, Yorkshire. His widow married Ralph Neville, 2nd Earl of Westmorland.[2][3]

His heir was his son Thomas.[13]

Research Notes

Coronation of Henry V

An earlier version of this profile stated, with no source, that John was present at the coronation of Henry V. This is also stated in some unsourced trees on the internet. While it is quite possible that John did attend, this is not mentioned in entries for him in Cokayne's Peerage or the works of Douglas Richardson or in his Wikipedia entry.

Burial

Bolton Abbey (Parish of Bolton Abbey) - former Augustinian Priory of St. Mary and St. Cuthbert, Bolton, North Yorkshire. Founded in the 12th century and closed in 1539 by Henry VIII in the Dissolution of the Monasteries and left to ruin. Bolton Abbey adjoins the present-day active church with the same name as the ruined church - Church of St. Mary and St. Cuthbert. Its motto is "a living church within historic ruins." The Wharfedale Bolton Abbey Estate is owned by the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. An e-mail was received by Alton Rogers on August 7, 2006 from Roy Lingard, Head Forester, Bolton Abbey Estate with detailed information about the Abbey.

Regarding the burial of Sir John Clifford at Bolton Abbey, Alton Rogers received an e-mail sent June 22, 2006 from Sebastion Fattorini, Administrator of Skipton Castle, Skipton, North Yorkshire with as much detail as is known about that:

"John, 7th Lord Clifford K.G. (1388-1422). Killed in action 13 March 1421/2 at the siege of Meaux. Lord Clifford's body was brought home to be buried at Bolton Abbey. Recent research has shown that some pieces of one blue-grey marble tombstone lying in the north aisle near the vestry came from his grave and still show the insert for part of Lord Clifford's Garter insignia."
