Biography

Timothy was born about 1835 [1], the son of Dennis and Catherine (Connors) Clifford. The family emigrated from Ireland in the late 1840s [2] They worked on the railroad and were found on the 1850 census in Cass, Ohio. They found their way to Liberty Indiana in Porter County by 1860 and there established their family's home. Timothy registered for the Civil War draft from there but by 1870 had married Mary Horgan and was a teamster in Chicago; the couple and their young family were living with his parents-in-law. They had established their own home at 117 Sigel Strett by the time of the 1880 census where his occupation was listed as "farmer" but was almost surely fireman [3]. He was killed in a fall from his wagon in 1899 [4]:

Teamster Meets With Peculiar Accident Which Puzzles Doctors
Timothy Clifford, a teamster who lived at No. 1316 Diversey avenue, suffered what appears to the physicians at Alexian Brothers Hospital to be a broken neck in a fall from his wagon at No. 1425 George Street yesterday afternoon. He is paralyzed from the neck down, and is semi-conscious. The physicians attending him say he cannot live. Clifford, who is 65 years old, received the fall while unloading some furniture from his wagon. His head and shoulders struck the pavement. He was removed to the hospital by the Sheffield avenue police. The doctors are puzzled over the nature of the man's injuries. [5]

His death notice in the Chicago Tribune, p 5 reads:

Timothy D Clifford, beloved husband of Mary (nee Horgan), father of Dennis F. Timothy, Lizzie, Minnie, and Catherine, aged 63. Funeral from late residence 1316 Diversey-blvd at 10 a.m. to Mount Carmel Church, thence by carriages to Calvary.

He is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Evanston, Illinois. [6][7]
