In the 1881 census Catherine (age 40) was the widowed head of household on Blenheim St, Liverpool, Lancashire, England. She was a Licensed Broker, living with her children Patrick & Ellen along with 5 boarders. She would later be accused of murdering Margaret Jennings, daughter of her boarder Patrick Jennings, as well as his wife & the mother of Margaret some years earlier.[7]

THE LIVERPOOL POISONING MYSTERY. An adjourned inquest on the body of Margaret Jennings, aged 18 years, the daughter of Patrick Jennings, a labourer, was held before Mr. Clarke Aspinall at Liverpool yesterday. The deceased died on January 25th inst, and was interred in Ford Cemetery, Liverpool, three days subsequently. In the consequence of the revelations in connection with the death of Thomas Higgins, alleged to have been poisoned by his wife and sister-in-law, Margaret Flannigan, the body of the deceased Margaret Jennings, who, prior to her death, lived with Mrs. Flannigan, was exhumed on the 16th uit. Traces of irritant poisoning were found at a post-mortem examination of the remains, and the first inquest was adjourned for an analysis of the viscera to be made. The Coroner now announced that another adjournment was in the interests of justice inevitable, and the inquiry was adjourned until Friday, the 21st inst.
