Biography

Philadelphia Mary Ann Clifton, the daughter of John Clifton and Philadelphia Evans, was born 2 April 1797 in Hawkhurst, Cranbrook, Kent, England. [1]Newspaper notice (below) of her death infers 1794 as birth year.

She married James Stace on 21 November 1818 at Northiam, Sussex, England.[2]

She emigrated to New South Wales with her husband James Stace per ship "Woodbridge" that arrived on 15 September 1838. She is not listed individually. James' entry records "STACE JAMES, Native Place Northingham; Calling Farm Labourer; Age 36; Wife's age 37; Three sons and one daughter between ages 7 and 14, and three daughters under 7 years; Religion Baptist; By whom Engaged Mr. Jones, Maitland".[3]
Ship News.
The emigrant ship Woodbridge is a vessel well adapted for the conveyance of settlers to our shores, her between decks being more than seven feet in height, and very spacious. The emigrants on board appear to be in a most healthy state, and their berths and other accommodations do great credit to the commanding officers on board, as also to the surgeon superintendent, Alexander Stewart, Esq., R N. The only deaths on board this vessel during her passage were those of eight young children. Messrs. R. Campbell & Co. are her agents. The emigrants will be landed this day, and as they are principally agricultural labourers, there will be a good opportunity for the settlers to provide themselves with such as they may require.[4]

Philadelphia (née Clifton) Stace died on 22 April 1878 at Wingham, Colony of New South Wales.[5]
MANNING RIVER.
(From the Manning River Times, April 27.)
- Mrs. Stace, of Wingham, a very old resident of this district, died at her residence, Wingham, on Tuesday morning last. Her health had been failing for some time past, and as she had attained the good age of 84 years, little hope of her recovery could be entertained. She was buried beside her husband in the Wingham cemetery.[6]

She was buried with her husband at Wingham General Cemetery, Wingham, Mid-Coast Council, New South Wales.[7]

Philadelphia Stace was heavily pregnant with her 10th child, when she and her husband James set sail aboard the "Woodbridge" for Sydney and a new life down under. they arrived in Sydney on September 15, 1838, with a new baby Sara Ann born just a few weeks earlier at sea in August 1838. Their last child Harriett Constance was born in 1842.

Clifton-1705 and Clifton-241 appear to represent the same person because: same immigration, death and marriage

Hi William,

No and I do not remember which researcher gave it to me. Where is Amhurst as I cannot find it listed as a place in Kent. There is Amherst Fort. Wadhurst is situated on the Kent-Sussex Border. (Amherst, in the parish of Pembury. Kent in early times Surname Amherst.)

I just found another Wikitree Profile for her Clifton-241 which says Wadhurst, Kent and it lists her parents. Philadelphia "Phillis" Stace formerly Clifton. The mystery deepens.

Sylvia do you have a source for her birth? My Details are taking from the Assisted Immigrant Passenger List, 1828-1896. on The "Woodbridge" Which states she was born in Amhurst, Kent. Her daughter Mary Ann Stace was born in Sussex, England in 1820
