John Cline Sr. was born about 1776, very likely in North Carolina.
He married Rachel Shaver in North Carolina on 5 Nov 1798. [1][2]
When Cline-6016 merged into Cline-397, the death dates were the only discrepancy. One had 1820; One had 1860.
Research Notes
Children believed to be (from a FindAGrave memorial?):
John Martin Cline Jr (1800–1821)
Michael Cline (1805–1850)
Andrew Jackson Cline (1806–1880)
Catherine Ann Cline (1807– )
John Cline (1808–1860)
William Cline (1810–1853)
Margaret Cline (1812–1865)
Census Records: The 1820 census doesn't have much detail and may not apply to this person. It is included because the location and ages could be John Martin and Rachel Cline. Two younger Clines are also on the census, John and Adam, who could have been their children.[3]
After 1758, their children were all born in North Carolina.[citation needed]
Michael and Catarina are known to have had a son named John (see her profile for details).
Son of Andreas
Some researchers believe that the John Cline who died in Tennessee is the son of Andreas: Johann Martin Cline (1758-1828). That profile and this one were recently in a proposed merge, which has been postponed. ~ Noland-165 12:45, 30 December 2021 (UTC)
Conflated Information
The parents and birth information for this profile, Cline-397 (b 1776 in NC to Michael), and Cline-639 (b 1758 in PA to Andreas) are for different people, but they appear to share the same death information. The proposal to merge these profiles was postponed 30 December 2021. Another proposed merge, with Martin Cline (abt.1755-abt.1828), was also postponed.
Hans Michael Klein of Mecklenburg County is known to have had a son named John, but not much more is known about him:
John was born before c1783, when he is named in his father's will (apparently c1765 or later, as the wording of the will implies his children were under age)[7]
John is named in a land transaction in Cabarrus County on 21 October 1799 (with his brothers George & Daniel)[8]
Raw Research
Movement of Martin Cline, born in Pennsylvania: The claim is that the family moved from PA in 1792; the lack of a Michael Cline in the 1790 census for Lincoln County, NC supports this. He moved from Carabbus County, NC to Sumner County, TN in August 1805.[9]
Martin Cline appears in the 1800 census for Lincoln County, NC where he is shown as over 45 years old. He also sold property there in 1804 prior to purchasing land in Sumner County, TN in 1805.[9]
Three NC Michael Clines: Klein-396 (names a son John in his will),[7] a Michael Cline Jr. who was killed in battle in 1783 (likely an unmarried son of Klein-396),[10] and Michael Cline (abt.1761-1840, married Fanny Killian), son of Sebastian and nephew of Klein-396.[11]
There's another Michael, born in Pennsylvania, with the bio text mentioning Virginia and a son in Harrison County, Indiana: Michael Cline (1756-1821).
Location Notes
Cabarrus County was formed in 1792 from Mecklenburg County. (Lincoln County was created in 1779, when “Tryon County [was] divided into Lincoln & Rutherford Counties”).[12]
Catawba County formed from Lincoln County in 1842; Lincoln County gained from Burke in 1782 & Burke County was formed from Rowan County in 1777.[12]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his ancestors' Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA test-takers in his direct paternal line.

Katherine asked me a question about Rachel Shaver's profile (Shaver-1989), which led me to re-review these profiles.
I disagree that John m Rachel Shaver and Martin m Rachel are the same person and I postponed the merge proposed for them (of Cline-397 and Cline-639) last month. I do not see that support for the merge has been added and still disagree that they are the same person, as does Mary, who posted research notes on Martin's profile (Cline-4433) that say, in part:
Martin Cline’s wife Rachel was not Rachel Shaver (under the theory Martin’s full name was John Martin Cline). [Rachel Shaver was married to a North Carolina John Cline only in 1798 and the Martin-Rachel children were born well before that date.]
As I noted in my reply to Katherine on Rachel Shaver-1989, my involvement with these Clines was by way of Fannie Killian, who married one of the Michael Clines who was in contention as John/Martin/John Martin's father (he's not), so please forgive my delayed response (I do not follow these profiles or the Cline name, so it takes me a while to re-acquaint myself with the family).
Katherine - I saw another comment from you on one of the profiles that lamented the steady supply of duplicate profiles... I have the same lament for many of my ancestors!
Perhaps you could create a space page to outline the family as supported by sources? It would probably not need to be as a complex as the one that I did for the multiple generations of Peter Joneses in Virginia, but that's the kind of reference I'm thinking might be needed - see Space: Virginia Peter Joneses.
Cline-6016 and Cline-397 appear to represent the same person because: I fear we will keep having duplicates of John and Rachael Cline forever. We merge them and then there are new ones. Suggest we have a conversation about them to see if we can find a viable solution.
I do believe that Cline-639 and Cline-397 are the same. I agree the father is Michael Cline but most likely it’s the Cabarius County Michael Cline. His death should be 1828 based on an indenture dated July 6, 1828 settling his estate.
Do you mean by "the Caabarius County Michael Cline" the Michael he's currently attached to (Klein-396) or that Michael's nephew of the same name (Cline-3971)?
Cline-1793 and Cline-397 appear to represent the same person because: Hi Katherine! Hans Michael Klein & his wife already had a son named John attached. Can that one and the one you created be merged?
edit - sorry... not sure what I was looking at. You just edited one of the two attached recently, and proposed a merge with a third profile. I'm a bit in the weeds trying to sort out the profiles attached for Michael & Catarina's children.
Cline-2829 and Cline-397 appear to represent the same person because: Birth year and location are the same. Death year is the same. Children are the same. There are two different wives, but I am not finding anything on Barbara Saffrit. Continuing to sort information, and adopted this file until the merge occurs.
Cline-839 and Cline-397 do not represent the same person because: born 92 years apart, different parents, different wife. I think this has been proposed in error, because there is nothing identical in the whole two profiles.
