1900 Jun 11: John Cline (born Mar 1886 in MD) can be found living in Catoctin, Frederick, Maryland. His parents are Charles C Cline (Feb 1859 in MD to parents both born in MD) and Sallie K Cline (Oct 1862 in MD to parents both born in MD). Also living in the household are his siblings Lydia C (Aug 1884 in MD), Jerry (Aug 1889 in MD), Ruth (Dec 1891 in MD), Victor (Feb 1894 in MD), Robert (Feb 1896 in MD), and Lucy B (Feb 1898 in MD). His parents had been married for 18 years, and Sallie was the mother of 11 children, 9 still living. Charles C is a farmer, while John is a farm laborer. All of the children, bar the two youngest, had attended school over the previous year. Charles is renting the farm.[4]
1910 Apr 15: John W can now be found living in Hawvers, Frederick, MD. His wife, May T Cline (25, born in MD to parents born in MD), also lives with him in his household. They had been married for one year and had no children. John is a farmer on a general farm, which they own with a mortgage.[5]
1918 Sep 12: John Wesley Cline, born 31 Mar 1885, registers for the draft in Frederick County, MD. John employs himself as a farmer, and his wife May is his nearest relative. John is of medium height, medium build, with blue eyes, and dark brown hair[6]
1920 Jan 21: The couple's household now also includes their children Gladys E (9, MD), Woodrow H (7, MD), and John K Cline (3.5, MD). The household lives on a farm that they still own with a mortgage, and John W is an employer. The children, other than the youngest, attended school.[7]
1930 May 05: The household has been joined by Harold L Kline (9, MD). John W and May T had married at the ages of 23 (John W) and 24 (May T), and their daughter Gladys had by now married at age 16. Only Harold was now attending school in the household, and their son, John, is now referred to as John K Kline Jr.[8]
1935 Apr 01: Now residing in Washington County, Maryland. [9]
1940 Apr 03: The house is owned, valued at $3,000, and is not a farm. John W is still married, but his wife is absent, and he is joined by housekeeper Viola R Smith. John W had attained a 4th grade level education. John works 70 hour weeks working as a restaurant manager, and he had earned an income of $700 in 1939.[10]
1942 Apr 11: John Wesley, born 31 Mar 1886, registers for the draft while living in Hagerstown, Washington, Maryland. He is self-employed and is described as being 5'11", 180 pounds, blue eyes, blonde hair, with a shallow complexion. He has a birth mark on his right cheek.[11]
1968 Aug 26: John Cline dies in Hagerstown at the age of 82.[12] Joining him on his tombstone is Mae Hauver (Oct 22, 1884 to Oct 10, 1956). They are buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown, Washington County.[13]

Obituary

John Wesley Cline, 82, died at his home, 1140 Jefferson Blvd., Monday.

He was born and reared at Middlepoint in Frederick County, and was a son of Charles C. and Sally Shupp Cline. He had lived in Washington County for the past 40 years. He was a farmer, retiring in 1958.

He is survived by daughter, Mrs. Gladys E. Smetzer of Smithsburg; sons, Woodrow H. of Hagerstown, Harold L. of Smithsburg; 24 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren; sisters, Misses Ruth and Lydia Cline both of Hagerstown, Mrs. Mary Armath of Milwaukee, Wis., Mrs. Alice McGowan of Hagerstown; brothers, Victor of Cascade, Robert of Biloxi, Miss., Charles R. of Hagerstown, and Albert of Frederick.

The body was removed to the Coffman Funeral Home where services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. The Rev. Ronald H. McClung will officiate; intombment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Family will receive friends at the funeral home this evening from 7 to 9. [14]
