Biography

Rhoda Cline was born on June 10, 1858, in Logan County, West Virginia. She was the daughter of James Cline and Priscilla Roberts. She married Harvey Bailey on May 18, 1888, in McDowell County, West Virginia, and they had five children. She then married Enoch Tolliver on April 19, 1922, in Wyoming County, West Virginia. Enoch was born 1855, Ashe County, North Carolina. He was a merchant, postmaster and Primitive Baptist preacher.

Rhoda and Enoch were murdered by her son, Wise Bailey, on December 27, 1927, in Maben, West Virginia.

Charged with Death Mother and His Aged Step-Father

BLUEFIELD, W. VA., Dec. 28 - A general search for Wise Bailey, wanted in connection with the murder of his mother and her husband, at Pierpont, early yesterday, was in progress in Southern West Virginia today.

Enoch Tolliver, 87, was found dead in bed, and his wife, Rhoda, 65, was found on the floor of the kitchen. A coroner's inquest revealed that the aged man was slain by blows on the head with the butt of a shotgun, while his wife's skull was crushed with a smoothing iron.

Wise Bailey, a son of Mrs. Tolliver by a former marriage, is said to have been seen in the vicinity about the time the double murder was committed. At least $500.00 was stolen from the Tolliver home, police said.
