John Clinton, Knt., 3rd Lord Clinton, was the son and heir of John de Clinton, Knt., 2nd Lord Clinton, and Margery Corbet.[1] Richardson states he was born about 13 April 1328,[2][3] but Complete Peerage has his birth "not later than March 1325/6".[1]
He was heir in 1354 to his uncle, Sir William de Clinton, Earl of Huntingdon,[2] and was knighted prior to 1355.[1] He served in the French Wars in 1355 and was at the Battle of Poitiers in 1356.[1][2] In 1360, he was lord of Prilleston, Norfolk for life, jointly with his cousin, Walter de Hopton, Knt.[2] He was in the wars in France again in 1380,[2] was Keeper of the lands of the attainted Earl of Warwick in 1390 and was Constable of Warwick Castle from 1390 to September 1397.[1]
Marriages and Children
Sir John Clinton married Idoine de Say,[4] as his first wife, about 1350. She was the oldest daughter of Sir Geoffrey de Say, 2nd Lord Say, Admiral of the Fleet, and Maud de Beauchamp.[1][2] They had three sons and two daughters:
He may have married an unknown wife who died before 26 June 1384.[1] Richardson does not recognize this marriage.
He married, secondly (or perhaps third), before 19 September 1379, to Joan ______, widow of Philip Limbury, Knt. Joan died 21 February 1387/8.[1][2] They had no issue.[2][3]
John married, third (or fourth), before 24 October 1388 (date of pardon for marrying without a license) to Elizabeth de la Plaunche,[7] daughter and eventually sole heiress of William de la Plaunche and Elizabeth Hillary.[1][2][3] Elizabeth, widow of John de Bermingham, Knt. and Robert de Grey, Knt. 4th Lord Grey of Rotherfield,[1] was born about 1347.[2] John and Elizabeth had no issue.[2]
Death
Sir John Clinton, 3rd Lord Clinton, died on 6 September 1398.[1][2] He was buried at Haversham, Buckinghamshire.[2][3] His widow, Elizabeth, remarried to John Russell, Knt. She died testate on 6 or 17 September 1423 and was buried at Haversham, Buckinghamshire.[2][8]

According to Burke's Peerage, Joan Clinton, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Clinton-144, was daughter of a different John Clinton, likely to be from the same family - John Clinton of Coleshill, Warwickshire. (107th edition, 2003, p.1191) See also http://www.thepeerage.com/p37658.htm#i376579. I have not researched further. Burke's Peerage does not give ancestry for her father.
