James was born in 1759, and was christened at St Andrew, Grinton, on 16 Apr 1759. He married Jane (Jenny) HIRD on 1 Dec 1789 at St Andrew, Grinton. He signed a will on 8 Mar 1837. He passed away on 10 May 1839.

Gravestone: (as transcribed in Findagrave) - "In memory of James CLOSE who died May 10th 1839 aged 80 years. Also Jane his wife who died Feb 3rd 1844 aged 69. Also Edward their son who died Feb 22nd 1844 aged 19 year (1) and of Jane their daughter who died Jan 5th 1818 aged 16 years."
