Biography

1933 'Obituary.', Catholic Freeman's Journal (Sydney, NSW : 1932 - 1942), 24 August, p. 27. , viewed 06 Aug 2022, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article146105756 OBITUARY. MRS CATHERINE TOAL. The death on August 7 of Mrs. Catherine Toal, of Bullioh, Victoria, has removed one of the oldest links between the old and modern Tallangatta. Deceased must have been the oldest female resident of the district, her connection with Tallangatta extending well over 50 years. The late Mrs. Toal (formerly Miss Close) was a native of Armoy, County Antrim, Ireland, and she was in the 92nd year of her age. In her early twenties, she arrived In Melbourne. Five years later she was married at Yackandundah to Mr. Joseph Toal, a senior constable of police, who was the first policeman to be stationed at Tallangatta, the first station being located on the Tatonga side of the river, close to where Mr. Michael Kirk's farm-house now stands. In the early eighties, Mr. Toal selected a fine piece of country at Bullioh, the land being now held by his son-in-law, Mr. James O'Reilly. Mr. Toal died over 19 years ago. Since then Mrs. Toal had resided at Albury and Bullioh. She was a wonderful woman for her age, and was a devout member of the Catholic Church. For some years past, Mrs. Toal had been living with Mr. James O'Reilly at Bullioh. Of a family of eight children, only one survives—Mrs. J. G. Smith (Anna), of Collie, W.A. Two of the daughters were school teachers. There are 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The burial took place in Tallangatta Cemetery, the funeral being numerously attended. The obsequies were conducted by Rev. Father Awburn.
