Barbara Frances Closs was born on 12 December 1854 in Pennsylvania, United States to Nicholas Closs and Margaret Black. ^[1]

In 1860 and 1870, Barbara lived with her parents and siblings in Dubuque, Dubuque County, Iowa. She was a student. ^{[2] [3]}

On 11 March 1879, Barbara married Edwin W. Beedle in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, United States. She was 24, and he was 27. ^[4]
