Biography

She was born in January 1754 in North Carolina.

Isaac Vest posted a marriage bond for Philip Williams and Anne Vest 18 Feb 1808 in Surry County, North Carolina.[1][2]

She died in 1840 in Volga, Johnson, Kentucky.

Research Notes

Please note: Anne Vest's marriage to Phillip Williams occurred in 1808, meaning that she cannot be the mother to any of Phillip Williams children.

Per interview notes of “John Fred Williams” in 1981 with “Young Kennard” and “Ernest Williams” (a descendant of Philip) and other conversations held with Ernest, “Ann (Vest) Williams” was a full-blooded Indian from the Great Lakes region (tribe unknown). Her Indian name was “Running Fawn,” NOT “Floating Cloud,” as has been propagated on many trees in apparent confusion with her mother-in-law “Keziah Elizabeth Brooks” whose Indian name was “Floating Cloud,” and who is believed to be 50% Cherokee. Which would have made Ann’s husband “Philip Williams,” whose Indian name was “Buckspike” 25% Cherokee. [Reference: https://wc.rootsweb.com/trees/167117/I178/-/individual]

Notes from imported profile

Ann was the maternal fifth great-grandmother of Loretta Lynn and Crystal Gayle. She was ¾ Native American from either North Carolina or the Great Lakes region. She met Philip during his capture in Illinois.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Anne by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Anne:

It is all wrong.  Look at the ages it shows Anne would have been about 54 when she married Phillip.   George their 1st child born shows a birthdate of 1780.  This Anne and Phillip married 18 Apr 1808 so they Can Not even be the parents of George or any of the children listed. I cannot agree this Anne married James Densmore either, that bond date of 1818 will not work with the birthdates of the children of William and Lucreta. They are born starting 1754 through 1786 so James Densmore is not the husband either. I am needing to get these profiles in order because of a Project I am working on that involves them. This profile is conflated with the real Anne Floating Cloud who married Phillip. If my logic is understandable should I make corrections here or just make an alternate profile for Anne the daughter of William and Lucreta.
I've read Williams will and, although he names Ann who married James Densmore in it, he doesn't name her as a child, so I don't know how to classify her. You're right, this Anne is NOT a child of William & Lucy and I've been trying to get it fixed for years with no luck. If you check the bio for William, Sr., I placed a link to his actual will record and you can read for yourself and decide. Debbie
Hi Debbie, I really need to refresh on this and check out the Will. There was something about these, I will get back with you Susan
Salvator (Silvator) Alford and Elizabeth Reynolds are Lucretia Alford's parents. She was my 5th great aunt.

Ann Vest, daughter of William and Lucy Vest, actually married James Densmore in 1818. She was still single at the time of her fathers death in 1812. ALL lineages citing a marriage to Philip Williams appear to be erroneous. She could not have been married in 1808 and still single in 1812, nor married to James Densmore at the same time as Philip Williams.

Her brother-in-law, Thomas Bennett, was the bondsman for her marriage to James Densmore in March, 1818 in Stokes County, NC. This is the correct, and only daughter named Ann, born to William and Lucy Vest. There weren't two. And his children are all named in his 1812 will in Stokes County. There is no Ann Vest Williams. Sorry.

“Floating Cloud” is a complete myth. There is no Native American connection in this family.

Thank you. I have been researching this bizarre family matter purely out of curiosity for the past week or so and none of it adds up. This woman was "Floating Cloud" but also "Running Fawn" and her mother-in-law was "Floating Cloud", too??? Different parents and kids seem to be given for them both on different sites as well. I've seen profiles of completely different women who were also supposedly Floating Cloud. All concrete evidence points to a solidly Anglo-Saxon background for both Ann(e) and Elizabeth Williams. This myth really needs to die. It's disrespectful to actual Cherokee people and it's an annoying roadblock in the way of uncovering real family history. It seems to have all come from rejected Guion Miller rolls applications and a few "family history"/general Southern folklore books you can't really find much about online. How typical. I will admit I would like to find and read the books in question simply for amusement purposes.

Unknown-200274 and Vest-206 appear to represent the same person because: clear duplicate

I have discovered a huge disparity in the Anne Vest Williams story. She is my direct ancestor through the Williams line. Unfortunately, there is a problem. She is not on the Vest family pedigree. There is an ANNA Vest who married another man in another city 10 years later. They cannot be the same person and I cannot find out from whence she came. Anne was born one year later than Anna, so she could have been her sister. But the official Vest family has not responded to any inquiry about them. Any help would be appreciated!

please see my comment re: Ann Vest. The Ann Vest married to Philip Williams is NOT the daughter if William Vest and Lucy Alford. Sorry. I descend from Samuel Vest thru his son, John Johnson Vest.
Vest-268 and Vest-206 appear to represent the same person because: This is the same person and needs to have information merged.
