Biography

Sullivan was born in 1849 in Vermont, the son of Solomon and Mary Clough.

In 1850, the Clough family lived in Albany, Vermont. The household included Solomon Clough, 35, born in New Hampshire, a miller, with $500 in real estate; his wife Mary Ann, 35, b. VT (errors?); and their four children, John D., 7, in school; Emily, 5, in school; Aurilla, 2; and Sullivan, 1. [1]

In 1860, the Clough family lived in Irasburg, Orleans, Vermont. The household included Solomon Clough, 44, born New Hampshire, a farmer with $2000 in real estate and $500 in personal estate; his wife Mary, 41, b. NH; their seven children, all b. VT, John D, 16; Emily, 14; Aurilla, 12; son Luldwin (Sullivan), 10; Jennie, 8; Fanny, 4; and Fred, 1. All but the youngest two children were in school. [2]

In 1870, the Clough family lived in Irasburg, Vermont. The household included Solomon Clough, 54, born in New Hampshire, who owned $6000 in real estate and $1000 in personal estate; his wife Mary, 51, b. NH; their four children, all b. VT, Sullivan, 21; Jennie, 18; Fanny, 15; and Fred, 11. The youngest three children were in school. [3]

Sullivan, 22, a farmer, married Charlotte E. Hinckley on 18 October 1871 in Irasburg, Vermont. Sullivan was born in Albany, VT, the son of Solomon and Mary A. (Clement) Clough. Sullivan was a resident of Irasburg. This was his first marriage. [4]

Their first child, a son, was born less than two months later, on 12 December 1871 in Irasburg, VT, where they lived. The father, Sullivan E. Clough was a farmer, b. Albany, VT. The mother, Lottie, was b. Georgia, VT. [5]

In 1880, they lived in Irasburg, Vermont. The household included Sullivan Clough, 30, a farmer; his wife Charlotte E., 26; and their son, Arthur, 8, in school. All were born in Vermont. Living nearby was Sullivan’s father, Solomon Clough, 64, b. NH, a widow, and a farmer; his two children, Jennie, 28, b. VT; and Fred, 21, b. VT. Also living with them was Solomon’s grandson, Maynard Clough, 7, b. VT, in school. [6]NOTE: also living nearby were the Thompsons: John, 64, and his wife Sarah, and a boarder, Mrs. Lizzie A. Metcalf, 14, and her one month old son. The Census enumerator noted on the form: “youngest mother in town”. (It’s interesting what one finds on these old records!)

Sullivan was born in 1849, and died in 1916, aged 66-67. He is buried with his wife Charlotte in Irasburg Cemetery, Irasburg, Vermont. [7]
