Biography

John, son of John Clutter and Rachel Marlin, was born 26 October 1848 in Morgan Township, Knox County, Ohio.[1] He spent the years before his marriage there. In 1850 the household encompassed his parents John (age 45, farmer) and Rachel Clutter (31), John Alonza (1), his siblings Celesta B. (14), Zebina Ann (12), Esmus Van Buren (10), Lucy Rosaline (8), Walden Dallas (6), Samuel Judson (4) and his half-sisters Elvira (18) and Sarah Jane (16).[2]

John A. (age 12) continued his schooling in 1860, when he lived with his parents John (age 56, farmer) and Rachel Clutter (42) and siblings Celesta (23), Van B. (20, farmhand), Lucy R. (18), Walden (16), Samuel J. (14), Hugh W. (10), Nancy "Alice" (6), Frank (4) and Nora Isabelle (eight months).[3]

By 1870 John (21) and his brothers Walden (24) and Hugh (19) assisted their aging father John (age 65, farmer) in cultivating the land to support their mother Rachel Clutter (52), younger siblings Alice (16), Frank (14), Norah B. (9) and William Orville (7) as well as his orphaned niece Lucy M. Ewart (4), daughter of his sister Celesta.[4]

About 1871[5] he married, Phebe Annabelle Warthen, daughter of Elisha B "Mervin" Warthen and Phoebe Wright. They had two daughters:

  • Cecella A. Clutter (b. 1877; d. 1879).[11][5]

Although documentary evidence is slim, it appears that the family may have migrated to Americus Township, Lyon County, Kansas, about 1873 with his brother Walden, who was there for six years before returning to Ohio.[12] Their daughter Lora believed for decades that she was born in Kansas and only in 1952 did she obtain a delayed birth certificate showing her birth in Ohio.[6]

Before 1880, they returned to Morgan Township, Knox County, Ohio, where John A. (age 31, farmer), Phebe A, (32) and Selora A. Clutter (6) lived very hear his father.[13] After his father's death from typhoid fever in 1883,[14] his brother Walden took over the family farm near John's as well as the care of their mother Rachel.[5] Lora married in 1893,[8] leaving John A. (age 52, farmer) and Phebe A. (53, mother of two, one living) residing on the farm in Morgan Township.[5] They had been married for 29 years.[5]

John A. (61) and Annabbel [sic] (62) moved to his wife's native home Washington Township before 1910.[15] John continued to cultivate the land he owned there, but employed others to help him.[15]

About 1927 they relocated to Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania,[16] where he spent the last several years of his life with his daughter and her husband.[17] He moved with them to nearby Wilkinsburg, Allegheny County,[18] where he died 2 September 1930 at age 81 from generalized arteriosclerosis.[19][1] His body was returned to Utica, Ohio for burial at South Lawn Cemetery.[1]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
