William was born in about the year 1510, the son of William Clutterbuck of Berkeley by his first wife, whose name is unknown. His father William Clutterbuck featured in the 1522 lay subsidy in Berkeley,[1] was involved in a court case in the reign of Henry VIII,[2] [3] [4] and was later mentioned as the former husband of Agnes Saniger in her will dated 1549.[5]
William Clutterbuck was mentioned as a son in law and overseer in the will of Agnes Saniger in 1549.[5] William’s wife was called Maryett, presumably a shortening of Margery. As Agnes mentioned her as the wife of her son in law, rather than “daughter”, and William had the same name as her former husband, William was presumably the son of her late husband by a previous marriage. William was presumably born between 1505-1515. He had two younger half brothers also mentioned in the will, Thomas and Robert.
In her will dated 1549, Agnes assigned her purchase at Bryge Hyll (Bridghill, Hinton) to William Clutterbuck and Maryett his wife.[5] His widow, Margery mentioned the Bridghill property in her will dated 1593.[6]
William and his wife Margery were involved in a matrimonial case in 1568,[7] and Margery mentioned a Jane Clutterbuck alias Olden in the will,[6]about whom nothing further is known. Jane might have been the illegitimate daughter of either William or Margery, or the wife of an _ Olden (Oldman).
He died in about the year 1570. A burial record of William Clutterbuck is dated to either 1570 or 1571, in the Berkeley parish register [8]
His birth year is estimated based on his father being of adult age in 1522, and was assessed in the Military Survey of Gloucestershire in that year. His son James married c.1570, and as such was presumably born in the 1540s. If William was aged about 30 when James was born, he was presumably born between 1510/20. His younger siblings Thomas and Robert were presumably of adult age in 1549, when they were mentioned in the will of Agnes Saniger.
