Michael was a Friend (Quaker)
Michael was the son of George Coates and Elizabeth Shaw
The details quoted in biography below are from the book, "The Langstaffs of Teesdale and Weardale" by George Blundell Longstaff , Pedigree 15, Dixon of Raby.
Michael Coates was the eldest child of George and Elizabeth Coates. He was born on the 24th December 1675, at Woodland in Lynesack. He died on the 13th January 1752, at Pierce Bridge, Gainford, Durham, England, and was buried at the Friends' Burial ground in Raby.
His will dated 15th February 1750, was proved at York in 1752.
He bequeathed lands, tithes, messuage, etc., at South Bedburn and Barnard Castle along with part of a house in York.
His sister-in-law Hannah Ward of York is mentioned.
Hannah Ward was the widow of his brother Joseph Coates who later married with Robert Ward. Son in law's, Edward Pease and Hugh Watson, to pay his married daughters Margaret Stansfield Hannah Watson, Elizabeth Pease, Rachel Dixon and Ann Raw, £100 each. His grandchildren William Raine, and Margaret Dixon each to receive £50. His daughter Mary Trotter was given a farm at Lynesack. Son in law's, Joshua Stansfield, Edward Pease and Hugh Watson were appointed as joint executors.
He married Margaret Welfoot, after the 5th May 1702. Their children were: Hannah (1703-1704), Sarah (1704-1706/7), Sarah (1706-1729), [L19] Hannah (1709-1785), Margaret (1712 - after 1743), Elizabeth (1715-1783), Rachel (1718/9-1782), Ann (1722 - after 1755), and Mary (1725 - c. 1755). The first six were born at Case Lee, the last three at Langleyford.
He inherited from his father the Case Lee farm and homestead.
He was a God-fearing honest yeoman, respected by his neighbours and in good esteem with the Society of Friends, of which he was a member, and his name appears on the Monthly Meeting books as attending the select meeting at Durham in 1726 and 1731 and in 1727 the Meeting of "Ministering ffrds" at Durham; he is named as a representative at Bishop Auckland in 1732, at Lartington in 1736 where he is appointed to attend a marriage at Raby 1745, etc., etc. Thomas Raylton speaks of his virtuous character with his brethren as a youth.
