Biography

Flag of Yorkshire (adopted 2008)
William Coates was born in Pudsey, Yorkshire, England.

William was born in Pudsey, Yorkshire, England, in 1844. (Pudsey is a market town in West Yorkshire, England. Once independent, it was incorporated into the City of Leeds metropolitan borough in 1974. It is located midway between Bradford city centre and Leeds city centre). His birth was registered in the second quarter in Bradford. His parents were Frederick Coates, and Sarah Pearson Holmes. He appears to be one of at least eight children.

William married Ellen Raper on September 20, 1863, in Hunslet, Yorkshire, at St Mary the Virgin. According to the parish register, both were nineteen years old. William's occupation listed as "Warehouseman", residing at Kendall Place. The witnesses were Richard Waterton, and Elizabeth Riley.

William and Ellen would have seven children, all born in Hunslet, between 1864 and 1878. (In the 1911 census, Ellen declared she had bore twelve children, but five had died). William and family are enumerated in the 1871 census residing in Hunslet. By 1881, William and six of his children are residing in Royton, Lancashire. Wife Ellen is living with her sister in Stoneferry, East Riding. She is listed as married, and a "General Domestic Servant". Reason for separation is unknown. By 1891, William and Ellen are together and residing in Sutton with Stoneferry, Yorkshire. They are living at Thistleton Dairy Farm, and would continue there through at least 1901. William's occupation in the census' is "Cow Keeper". By 1911, William and Ellen had left the dairy farm and were residing in Hull. William was sixty seven, but still working. He lists his occupation as "Milkman".

William passed away in 1914. His death was registered in the third quarter in Hull, Yorkshire. He was seventy.
