Biography

Sarah (Coates) Hailstone was born in Hunslet, Yorkshire, England.

Sarah was born in Hunslet, Yorkshire, England, in 1872. Her birth was registered in the first quarter. She was the daughter of William Coates and Ellen Raper, and one of twelve children. (In the 1911 census, her mother stated she had twelve children but five had died). Sarah and her family remained in Hunslet through at least 1878. In the 1881 census, she, her father, and five siblings are enumerated residing in Royton, Lancashire. Her mother was residing in Stoneferry, Hull, Yorkshire, with her sister, Elizabeth. Reason for separation is unknown. In the 1891 census, her parents are together and the family is residing on a dairy farm in Stoneferry, Hull. (Stoneferry is a suburb of Kingston upon Hull).

Sarah married James Hailstone in Hull, in 1894. The marriage was registered in the fourth quarter in Sculcoates. Sarah and James would have three daughters, and remain in the Hull area. James was a dairy farmer, and the family was enumerated in two different locations in the 1901, and 1911 census'.

Sarah passed away in 1946. Her death was registered in the third quarter in Hull. She was seventy four.
