He married Elizabeth Walker by licence on 21 October 1641, in Gaddesby, Leicestershire, England.[3]
He was named as son and heir in the will of Nathaniel Coates of Sproxton in 1650.[4]
Henrie Coats the husband of Elizabeth Coats was buried at Sproxton on 25 December 1671.[5] He died intestate: letters of administration of his estate were granted to his brother John Coates[6] and son Henry Coates (1642-1729).[7]
Research Note
This person is named in many online trees as the son of Alexander Coates of Leicester and Martha Wigley of Scraptoft. This information is taken from a paragraph in The Pennsyvlania Magazine of History and Biography, which states:
In 1601 Alexander Cotes, gentleman of Leicester, married Martha, daughter of Henry Wigley, of Scraptoff, and Frances, third daughter of Richard Bradgate, Esq., of Peatting Parva, who were probably the grandparents of Thomas Coates.[8]
The statement is unsourced, and the glaring spelling errors in the place names "Scraptoft" and "Peatling Parva" give rise to suspicion, but the statement seems to match the marriage of Alexander Cotes (1631-1665) and Martha (Wigley) Cotes (abt.1633-) in Leicester in 1657, in which case there is no way they can have been grandparents of Thomas Coates, born in Sproxton in 1659.
John W. Jordan, Colonial Families of Philadelphia, Vol. 1 (New York: Lewis Publishing Company, 1911), page 650, cited in the Biography, names Thomas Coates' father as Henry, and his great-grandfather as Lawrence Coates, but does not name his grandfather. It seems several contributors to Ancestry et al. have inserted the name "Alexander" based on Levick's speculation. Probate records and the Sproxton parish registers held in the Leicester Record Office and available on Find My Past clearly show that Henry was the son of Nathaniel, who in turn was the son of Lawrence.
