James Solomon Coates, known as Solomon, was born in about 1830 in Horsehouse, Coverdale, Yorkshire.

James married Sarah Tong or Tonge in 1865 at St Stephen's Church in Lever Bridge, Bolton, Lancashire.

Their daughter Emily Coates was born in about 1870 in Crow Nest, Little Lever, Bolton, Lancashire.

By April 3rd 1881, the family had moved to Parr, St Helens, Lancashire.
