US Black Heritage Project
Spencer Coates is a part of US Black heritage.

Spencer's son Charles Coates was interviewed December 3, 1936 in Florida.

"Father Charles Coates, as he is called by all who know him, was born a slave 108 years ago at Richmond, Virginia on the plantation of a man named L'Angle."

"After the death of his wife, Charles left with his mother and father, Henrietta and Spencer Coates and went to Savannah, Georgia."

Son Charles Coates was interviewed in Florida by Viola B. Muse as part of the Federal Writer's Project of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The results are made available by the Library of Congress. [1]
