He married Ontamenia Smith Kline November 17, 1891 in Trinity Episcopal Church, Southwark, Philadelphia, daughter of Frederick Kline and Elizabeth Smith. She was born February 8, 1872 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and died November 17, 1947 in Richmond Heights, St. Louis, Missouri (1348 Hawthorne Place).

John was Baptized at Trinity Episcopal Church, Southwark, Philadelphia, on January 22, 1871.
John was a printer in Philadelphia with his father, Henry Clay Coates, and his brother Frederick Godshall Coates. He moved to St. Louis, Missouri, after 1913 and was a printer there, also, managing the printing plant of William R. Warner Pharmaceutical Company (later became Warner-Lambert).
After moving to St. Louis, the family lived on Odell and Magnolia near Tower Grove Park in south St. Louis; they later moved to Ferguson and Webster Groves, suburbs of St. Louis.
During World War I, John began work in 1918 as a YMCA secretary, making seven round trips on transports to England, taking soldiers over and bringing the wounded back.
