The fifth child of eight, Thomas was born in Kettlewell, Yorkshire, England, in 1832 to parents Thomas Coates and Elizabeth Coates. His family moved to Ontario, Canada in about 1833 and, in due course, he worked as a jeweller. He married Frances Elizabeth Barnett (1831-1926) in 1861 in Lanark, Ontario, they had four children and he died in 1920 at the age of 72.
