Thomas COATES.[1][2]

The family had lived in Sproxton Leicestershire and the neighbouring village of Cotes for many generations.
After his arrival in Pennsylvania USA, Thomas received along with other properties as his city lot the piece of ground at the northwest corner of second and Market Streets, the northern boundary being that of what is now Christchurch Ground, the western extending to and including Grindstone Alley on Market Street, a portion of which property is still owned by his descendants.

Coates Reynell Papers

Thomas Coates (d. 1719) of Leicestershire, England settled in Philadelphia in the late seventeenth century. In 1694 he married Beulah Jacques, also originally of Leicestershire, but a descendant of French Huguenots who had fled to England to escape persecution. The first person by name of Coates on American soil, with whom we have positive knowledge, was Thomas Coates, emigrant from Sproxton, Leicestershire, England, in 1682 or 83. Was born 9, 26, 1659, son of Henry and Elizabeth Coates, of old Leicestershire and Derby families, and were members of the Episcopal Church. Thomas became a successful merchant in Philadelphia, and owned several lots at corner of 2nd and Market streets, where he resided. Two remaining great-great-granddaughters yet (1904) possess one of these lots at above corner, but reside on Arch Street.
" Thomas married Beulah Jaques, of Philadelphia, and became members of the Society of Friends, and were valued members of the society and citizens of the city. Henry T. Coates, publisher, is of this branch of the name.

I have checked through a book that I have, "THOMAS COATES - Who Removed From England To The Province of Pennsylvania - 1683" by Henry T. Coates, 1897. This book shows the settlement of Thomas Coates who came from England with a Grant of 5,000 acres of land in and around Philadelphia in 1683. It shows that he was b. Sept 26, 1659, mar. Beulah Jaques (she b. 1659), he d. July 22, 1719. She d. 1741. They had 10 children, 3 of whom were named Thomas. The lst was b. 1697, the 9th b. 1713, d. 1714; the 10th b. 1717, d. 1717. This suggests that after the death of each Thomas, a new baby was given that name. Wife of each not named but text describes Elizabeth Coates, wife of Thomas Coates.
I also have a book, "Family Memorials and Recollections; or Aunt Mary's Patchwork" by Mary Coates, Philadelphia, 1885. This book has more anecdotes and personal relationships but also has some genealogy. It shows a Table of Descent from Henry and Elizabeth Coates as: Thomas Coates, 1659, m. Beulah Jacques, 1696; Samuel Coates, 1711 m. Mary Langdale 1734; Josiah Langdale Coates 1747 m. Mary Morrison 1772; kGeorge M. Coates 1779 m. Rebecca Horner, 1807 (Note here that Mary Coates says that the poem, "Little Jack Horner sat in the corner" etc. was named for one of that family).

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Thomas by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Thomas:
