Biography

Thomas Church Cobb and Rev. M.D. Vannoy came to Texas in early 1850 from Campbell County, Tennessee. They married two Wheeler Sisters. Thomas Church married Ann Louise Wheeler July 27, 1837 in Campbell County, Tennessee and M.D. Vannoy married Catherine Calvin Wheeler in 1825 in Campbell County, Tennessee. The girls' brother, Samuel Wheeler, was the father of Peyton Wheeler whose mother, Nancy J. Wheeler, came to Texas with her brothers-in-law, Thomas Church Cobb and Rev. M.D. Vannoy. Rev. M.D. Vannoy was a Presbyterian preacher and pastured the Bethel Presbyterian Church from 1850 to 1858 at which time he retired as the pastor and the Rev. Rudolph became the pastor of this church near Lane's Academy. No other records have been found on Rev. Vannoy later than this time and it is was assumed that he must have died about 1858, however our family records show that he died in 1873 at the age of 66 years. It was rumored that the Cobb, Vannoy and Wheeler families brought a trunk of gold with them from Tennessee. In a letter to their relatives back in Tennessee, it was mentioned that they (Cobb and Vannoy) had helped to get Nancy J. Wheeler settled on a farm. (This was not a rumor but a fact. The Wheeler Family had considerable wealth and they were also of Choctaw Indian descent.)

On 6 Sep 1870 at the time of the 1870 US Census, head of household Thomas C. Cobb (age 57, born in NC) was employed as a Teamster and living on real estate valued at $2,500 with $2,600 in personal estate in Precinct 1, Fannin County, Texas with his wife Ann L. Cobb (age 48, born in TN); son Benton Cobb (age 22, born in TN); daughter Ann L. Cobb (age 20, born in TN); son James E. Cobb (age 27, born in AL) employed as a Teamster with personal estate valued at $1,000; daughter-in-law Mary J. Cobb (age 22, born in TN); grandson Samuel E. Cobb (age 4, born in TX); and grandson Wheeler Cobb (age 2, born in TX). [1]
