Was this the William Cobb who worked as Richard Dykes Alexander's assistant, but who retired from the photography business in 1868 saying it was to with the effect of the chemicals on his health He would have been 34.

I really dont know. However I had a quick look and found the article that this was extracted from. "My" William Cobb was described as a farmer and fitter apprentice on the 1851 census when he was still at home with his family. There are no further records that I can identify as being mine for certain which means he either died before 1861 or completed no more censuses. However, there is a William Cobb who was initiated into the Masons in Ipswich in 1864, described as an artist, this may or may not be the William Cobb that is of interest to us. The william Cobb that you are asking about does appear to be recorded after leaving Ipswich working as a photographer in SE London and later N London. He is on 1871-1901 censuses at these locations recorded as a photographer but birthplace has been Yaxley, SFK. Mine was born Ipswich and Yaxley cannot be called part of Ipswich. I also found the marriage of one of his sons who was recorded as a photographic instructor at the Royal Military Acadamy. Having widely researched the Cobb family of Darsham, I have not found may artistic leanings. Most of the Cobbs made the living from the land (ag labs). So I leave you none the wiser. It may or may not be the same, I will continue to investigate and let you know if I find anything. Let me know if you want to know more,

Fabian, Further researched this matter. The William I have recorded here is not the William that you mention, a photographer. I think it is fairly conclusive. I can give you more detail. He is on the censuses in Suffolk 1841 - 1861.
