James was the son of Gina C. Cobb of Depew New York and he enlisted in the US Army In Buffalo New York. Sgt Cobb arrived in Vietnam for duty on August 31, 1970 where he was assigned to and served with Troop B, 2d Squadron, 17th Calvary, 101st Division, USARV.
On February 15, Sgt Cobb was the crew chief onboard a UH-1 aircraft during inclement weather when it was making an approach for a night landing at the Phu Bai airfield in Thua Tien Province when it crashed killing all onboard.
