Joseph Stanhope Cochran was born Dec 19, 1805 in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. He was called "Stanhope" or "J.S." in several records. This was probably done to differentiate him from other Joseph Cochran's. He was the son of John Cochran and Dorcas Harris.
He is called "Stanhope Cochran" in the Will of his Maternal Grandfather, Samuel Harris Jr, dated 18 Jun 1824 in Mecklenburg, North Carolina.
He relocated to Fruitland, Cape Girardeau, Missouri with his Father, John Cochran, between 1827-1829. (Side note: I have located quite a few baptisms at the Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church, in Fruitland, Girardeau, Missouri indicating the family were members of that Church).
Joseph Stanhope Cochran married "Jane G Miller" on 28 Apr 1831 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
Joseph Stanhope Cochran and Jane G. Miller had at least 5 known children according to baptism records and the 1850 census in Jasper County, Mississippi:
John C. Cochran - born Abt. 1832 in Fruitland, Cape Girardeau, Missouri
Martha Cochran - born Abt. 1834 in Fruitland, Cape Girardeau, Missouri
Elizabeth Dorcas Cochran - Baptized as a "Infant" on 14 Jun 1835, Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church, Fruitland, Cape Girardeau Co, Missouri, USA
William Lee Cochran - Baptized as an "Infant" on 27 Jun 1837, Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church, Fruitland, Girardeau, Missouri, USA (Died between Baptism and the 1850 Census in Jasper, Mississippi dated Nov 1, 1850.
Margaret Jane Matilda Cochran - Baptized as an "Infant" on Jun 3, 1841, Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church, Fruitland, Cape Girardeau Co, Missouri, USA
The Baptism record for the youngest child, Margaret, dated Jun 3, 1841, also states that the wife of J.S. Cochran is "deceased".
The last record I have found to date for Joseph Stanhope Cochran is the 1850 census record in Jasper County, Missouri dated Nov 1, 1850. He is listed with 4 of his 5 children... His youngest son, William Lee Cochran, must have died sometime between his Baptism on June 27, 1837 and Nov 1, 1950. As stated above: His wife, Jane G. Miller died before the baptism of their youngest child who was still an infant on Jun 3, 1841, in Fruitland, Cape Girardeau, Missouri. This leads me to believe she probably died in childbirth.

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Stanhope by comparing test results with other carriers of his ancestors' Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
