Biography

William (Cockran) Cochran was born in the Colony of New South Wales (1788-1900)

William was born in 1828 and baptised at Narellan, New South Wales on 4 January 1831. He was the son of William Cochran & Helen.[1][2]

William Cochran married Margaret Baynard in St. Andrews Scotts Church, Sydney, Cumberland, New South Wales on 21 February 1853.[3][4][5] They had the following children:

  1. Helen Cochran (1853-1870)
  2. Benjamin Cochran (1855-)
  3. Ada (Cochran) Ritchie (1858-1902)
  4. Walter W Cochran (1860-)
  5. Lily Cochran (1862-)
  6. Thomas Buckland (Cockran) Cochran (1864-abt.1934)
  7. Lucy Cochran (1867-)
  8. William B Cochran (1869-)
  9. Montague Cochran (1871-1888)
  10. Arthur Lewers Cochran (1874-1952)

In 1890 William was operating a business as a hatter in Brown Street, Paddington when his business went into bankruptcy.[6]

His wife Margaret died at their residence of 1 Victoria Road, Glebe Point on 16 August 1918.[7]

William died in Glebe in May 1920.[8][9]

Research Notes

An Ancestry tree suggests that the death and funeral of William’s mother is:

  • NSW BDM death registration of COCHRANE, HELEN, Reg. No’s 2592/1852 V18522592 102, and 306/1852 V1852306 106, both showing AGE 50
  • Family Notices (1852, April 15). The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842 - 1954), p. 3. Retrieved February 20, 2022, from http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article12935945
  • Family Notices (1852, April 16). The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842 - 1954), p. 4. Retrieved February 20, 2022, from http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article12935971

Further, it suggested that William’s mother was born illegitimately in 1798 in the last name SCOTT, to mother Helen HORSMAN, at South Leith, Scotland.

The funeral notice of the possible mother cited above suggests that William’s sister is the the Margaret Cochran who married Benjamin Mountcastle in 1848 or 1849 per NSW BDM marriage registrations 1792/1848 V18481792 73C, and 610/1849 V1849610 79.

He passed away in 1920.
