Biography

John Lowry Cochran was born on 5 November 1779 in Pennsylvania. His parents were James Cochran and Margaret Lowry.

He arrived in Zanesville, Ohio in 1806 and established a trade as a carpenter, rolling cigars on the side.[1] By 1817, he was manufacturing tobacco full-time, becoming Zanesville's first Tobacconist.[2] During his life, he served the community in a number of public offices, including Market Master, Marshal, and tax collector.

John L Cochran married Mary Catherine Brecker on 20 January 1811.[3][4] Their known children are:

  • James Cochran - b. 1811
  • Wyatt Campbell Cochran - (1813-1891)
  • David B. Cochran - (1815-1865)
  • John "Lowry" Cochran - (1817-1850)
  • William Cochran - b. 1819
  • Robert Loyal Cochran - (1821-1905)
  • Samuel Wallace Cochran - (1823-1901)
  • Hugh Macauley Cochran - (1825-1922)
  • Caroline Amanda (Cochran) McKinney aka Monroe - (1828-1873)
  • Milton Adair Cochran - (1830-1853)
  • Isaac Brownlee Cochran - b. 1833

U.S. Census records between 1820 and 1840 show John L Cochran living on a property in Zanesville, Ohio with his wife and various children.[5][6][7] The 1850 U.S. Census adds his mother-in-law, Susanna Stinton (age 79), to the household.[8] Finally, the 1860 U.S. Census shows an 80-year-old John Cochran living with his wife, Mary C (age 68); his widowed daughter, Caroline Monroe, and her two children: Adair (age 4) and Susan (age 2).[9] Also in the household is a brother, Robert Cochran (age 78, b. Pennsylvania).

John L Cochran died during April 1868 at his home in Zanesville, Ohio.[10]

Research Notes

As indicated on Barbara Shroyer's website (cited below), there are some conflicting dates for the elder John L Cochran's death, although all agree it was sometime during April 1868. The "official" county death record lists April 6. The "Early History of Zanesville" article (cited below) claims it was actually April 21. - Freeth-52 03:35, 22 July 2021 (UTC)

Records & place names suggest there is some sort of connection to the Lazarus John Lowry family through his mother's side, although I have not been able to find it yet! - Freeth-52 13:43, 22 July 2021 (UTC)
