Biography

Catherine was born about 1848.

The 1861 census shows Catherine and her brother Thomas as boarders with an Edward Murray, his wife Anne, and their family and other boarders at 14 Marybone, Liverpool. Catherine's age is recorded as 13 which means her birth was around 1848. Her birthplace was recorded as Ireland.

The 1871 Census (from Liverpool) records her place of birth as Castlebar, Ireland.

The family story was always that she was from Kilkenny - there is a Kilkenny township (Kilkenny Cross) on the outskirts of Castlebar so it is possible she was born or lived there (or that one or both of her parents were from Kilkenny).

She married John Hogg, a hatter, in 1866 at Holy Trinity C of E Church, St. Anne Street, Liverpool 3. The marriage certificate records her father as John Cochrane, a joiner.

Her death certificate shows she died of "phthisis" (tuberculosis) in Liverpool in 1874. Her daughter Andrewina would have been about 7 years of age and her daughter Henrietta about 3 years of age.

The 1871 census showed the family living at No. 7 Raglan Terrace, Everton (although by the time of her death they were living at 39 Montague Street).

Raglan Terrace was a typical Victorian "court". They were often overcrowded and were later declared "unsanitary". Many were demolished in the 1900's.

It is possible that the family's living conditions contributed to Catherine's poor health and subsequent premature death (at age 26) from tuberculosis (a disease often associated with overcrowding).

You can see typical Liverpool 'court' housing in this short video from Liverpool Museums: http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/mol/visit/galleries/peoples/court-housing.aspx

There is a burial record for a baby Janet Hogg, who died just one month before Catherine, on February 12th 1874, at the same address: 39 Montague Street - her mother's maiden name is recorded as "Cochrane" - so this is very likely John and Catherine's youngest and last child together.
