Biography

Early Years in Scotland

Robert Cochrane was born in Annan, Dumfriesshire, Scotland in 1825, and baptized on 16 October 1825[1]. His parents were John Cochrane and Agnes Burgess[2]. He married Margaret Gordon on 8 Feb 1850 in Annan, Dumfriesshire[3], and began a family.

Leamside, Durham, England

In the mid-1850s, after the birth of his son Robert (1853) and before the birth of his daughter Agnes (1857), the family moved to Leamside, Co. Durham, England. The family move seems to coincide with the redevelopment of Leamside Railway Station, which was completed in April 1857. Robert began work for the North Eastern Railway Co. at Leamside Railway Station, eventually becoming the signalman there. Many of his other family members also worked for the North Eastern Railway Co.

In about 1880 his daughter Ellen befriended William Cowan, who was working as a miner at the time. Robert Cochrane was instrumental in helping William Cowan change his job and William left the mine and began work in the ticket office at Leamside Railway Station. This must have happened between the 1881 census, which says that William was a miner, and Robert Cochrane's death in 1883. Some years later William Cowan married Ellen Cochrane.
